Concussions in Women’s Volleyball

NCAA Sports Injury fact sheet, (article downloaded from Datalys Center, www.datalyscenter.org).

This is a deep dive into statistics and numbers. We can get through this together by going slow and looking at the moving parts separately.

Athletic exposures is a way to measure the risk from a specific injury. Think of it this way each time a student goes to practice and plays in a game there is a certain level of risk for getting an injury. So if there is an overall injury rate (risk) of 4.3 per 1,000 athlete exposures. This means that for every 1,000 students that play volleyball there will be about 4 injuries of some type based on the history of injuries in this sport at the college level.

Digging deeper - of the 1,0155 NCAA member schools there were 14,827 student athletes participating in women’s volleyball. So based on the athletic exposure rate we would anticipate 64 students to have some type of injury due to the sport. Of these 63 injuries student athletes there would be 3 students with concussion.
